The Flight of Hope

As I am sitting on my bed here in London on a Sunday night. Expecting it to snow on a summer night from how cold it is outside. I realized that I needed to share an experience that I went through a few weeks ago that I still couldn’t get out of my mind.

After graduating from Milan I wanted to figure out what my next step in life had to be. I had to decide whether staying in Milan is the best viable option for me or is it moving back to the US or The Middle East, or even London, or Paris. So I took a few swift decisions. I booked a flight to Jordan to go see my family, I thought in the meanwhile I would go check out my opportunities in Dubai, and finally I enrolled for a summer course at Central Saint Martins in London.

Now the story begins when I boarded my flight from Dubai to Amman, I was heading to Amman to celebrate Eid with my family – celebrating the end of Ramadan. I had just boarded my flight and I sat on the window seat I asked for. It being a 3-3 airplane (6 seats on each aisle with 3 seats on each side). I realized the seat int he middle in between me and the man sitting on the isle seat was empty. When everyone had boarded the airplane, the flight attendant walked in an old lady, and sat her in that empty seat. We maneuvered to accommodate the old lady I assisted her in buckle her seatbelt as she settled in I went back to watching my movie, but I realized she had asked the man next to her to dial a number for her, over my earphones she I could hear her speaking to her soon and informing him to take good care of his wife, which she repeated 3 times. In those moments, the sun had set and people automatically pulled out their food to break their fast. Zoning back into my movie, I then saw man jump from behind and had a lady a sandwich and then a bottle of water. At that point I said to myself hell to the movie I need to get in and know what was going around me. I packed my iPad took my headphones off and decided to zone in onto the conversation that was going between her and the guy sitting on the aisle seat. I soon realized that the man behind me had asked her if she was fasting and she said “yes” so he automatically cut half of his sandwich and gave it to her, which she kindly denied, he also asked her if she wanted to have some water and that she gently accepted. Then as the conversation went on she informed him that she had just come to Dubai a few days ago and had lot consciousness due to her blood pressure. But due to her fall she had busted her lip, lost a tooth, and scratched her face. She had also informed him that she lives in New York and she was here to visit two of her children that lived in Dubai, and how they were busy with their own lives, and how she has no one else specially after her other son got shot due to some gang violence a few years back. And from how sad she was and her deep morning she had a stroke that affected her brain, and she can no longer see properly anymore. Registering all that I didn’t know what to do, here I was eavesdropping on someone else’s conversation, at the same time I couldn’t help but feel with the woman.

Throughout the flight people kept asking her left and right if she needed anything or any assistance. As soon as the flight landed they had made way for her and she was taken right away. I may never meet those people on the flight again but there was something that happened there that was somehow magical. No one cared about her past, or even who she was, everyone was there to help even if it was taking out of their own food and giving it to her after a long day of fasting. I sat there and wondered how our society was. Was that all for the sake of Ramadan, and then after that we turn into sharks? But I realized that no it has become an automatic instinct that we have because we were raised upon such morals. But its one of those instincts that you somehow brush away, because sadly in our modern society its either eat or be eaten.

I would love to think that the great majority still hold to such morals and ethics. I felt a great need to share this incident which took place around 2 weeks ago because I still can’t get it out of my mind or over it.

So fashion week finals kicks in and Milan is going crazy as usual. Endless parties, endless outfits, and endless good looking people. Here are some images from today’s street style! Enjoy!

Daily Obsessions

So now that men’s fashion weeks have started and the streets of the fashion capitals are infested with greek deity figures. Lets present this post to all the men out there. With summer bringing in perfectly tanned bodies, open button down shirts, and endless beach parties; there is something we all have to agree on, there is nothing better than a perfectly accessorized man. With the perfect amount of layering, the man becomes so intriguing to others. Which creates an obsession of wanting to know the story behind this guy. As Evan Yurman puts it “From the beginning of time, man has had a need to adorn himself with things that mean something to him.”

David Yurman launched a new collection inspired by the SouthWest called the Frontier and I am obsessed with it!

The City of the Seven Hills

On our last day in Rome we had to visit the last two places on our list, The Vatican and The Colosseum. We started our day by visiting St. Peter’s Basilica, The Vatcian museums, and The Sistine Chapel. I have never been this mesmerized in my life. The walk through The Vatican Museums and The Sistine Chapel – I can’t say it except in the most cliche way- took my breath away. The frescos, the detailing, the grand rooms. There was a force that tickles your taste buds, no your creative buds that allows you to imagine the feeling of the painter when creating these masterpieces. You realize that there is beauty hidden in every corner. The cracks in the walls which some people may claim as bad restoration, but I saw it as another distinctive layer that gives piece depth/history. And the beauty of integrating different cultures and nudity in their art-which could have been frowned upon among conservatives- inspires the viewer and gives them a new prospective to look at the world from (These topics will be further emphasized on in future posts). As you walk through the rooms and see the future and past colliding, you get to one of the world’s most prized possessions. The Sistine Chapel, as soon as I walked in you get this feeling of wanting to sit down or even kneel to such beauty. Even after 600 years for an artwork to be grasped by the viewer just proves the great mastery behind it. Sadly no pictures were allowed in the Sistine Chapel therefore, I can’t share this experience with you.

After The Vatican, off we went to The Colosseum to end our list of the most touristy things to do in Rome. The next morning off we went to catch our trains and flights to get back home.

The images below may seem too zoomed in. They are purposely taken like that to see the detailing, to serve as inspirations for my future collections.

The Eternal City

The second day in Rome, we decided to take it easy and not get up early as it was a Sunday and we were exhausted from the traveling the day before. So after I met everyone’s father on Instagram and Facebook we started off by visiting Sant’Ignozio and Piazza Venezia. As soon as we entered Sant’Ignozio I was speechless, nicknamed the church of illusions, the painter –Pozzo- used a painting technique called the Tromp-L’œil. This allows the viewer to see the frescos in a 3D form. You’ll find images of the fresco below that will further explain this technique. Later on under the rain we found ourselves in Piazza Venezia and later on in Piazza Spagna. The sky was beautiful that day as it got darker for the rain and then somehow it lit up to show a double rainbow.

Roma

As I may have mentioned before, I have a friend visiting me here in Italy, and we decided that we should take a trip to Rome as we both haven’t been there before. So we hopped on a train heading from Milano to Roma and decided we should spend three nights. Hoping that they would be enough to see this eternal city everyone talks about!

As soon as we arrived we checked into our rooms and off we went to explore, yes we embraced our inner Marco Polos and headed out. On our first day we got to see the Spanish Steps, Fontana di Trevi, Piazza Navona and The Pantheon. We have these two sayings in Arabic that perfectly define our experience:

قليل البخت لا يتعب ولا يشقى ( 1  (He who has no luck should not waste his time working)

2) قليل البخت يلاقي العضم في الكرشة (He who has no luck would find a bone while eating a sheep’s intestine- which usually has no bones)

We went to the Fontana di Trevi and it was under construction. We went to the Spanish steps and part of it was also under construction. Exhausted from the long walks we decided to head back to the hotel to freshen up and get changed for dinner. I can safely say I gained 5 kg within a week. Here are some images from yesterday:

SHISEIDO Event

To kick off the world cup in style and fashion I was invited to the Shiseido event in Sephora in Milan. The theme of the event was “Brazilian Summer Party”. Everything there was perfectly setting the mood for the first game of the season! The music, the drinks, the fruits being passed around, and not to forget the scorching heat! (Yes Milan has been having an abnormal heat wave, where two showers a day won’t even cool you down). Here are some images from the event!

Also an update on my life I just got to Rome today! I will update you about my first day here in Roma tomorrow! But for now I better start getting ready for dinner! Arrivederci!

P.S. It looks like I am doing some sort of a dougie but trust me I wasn’t. I was just rocking some great harem pants (shirwal), a top from Zara, a shirt from Ralph Lauren around my waist, and my favorite Dolce & Gabbana shoes.

World Cup Fashion

So the world cup has started… SURPRISE! Whether you live under a rock or somewhere on another planet you’ve probably heard the fans screaming at their TV’s. You’ve probably seen this phenomenon that even Freud didn’t predict, men stocking food and drinks but don’t get me wrong its not for apocalypse its for the games. Yes, if there were aliens studying our habits they will conclude that the TV is hypnosis and its not a relaxing one. It’s a drunk, screaming, anxious spell that has been cast on 95% of the world’s Men and a mere 35% of women’s population.

We always know that when men compete their cave man instincts come out and there is nothing stopping them from doing things that would piss off the opposing team. Some teams want to compete on every level that took their competition to their looks and how they present themselves. In comes England and Italy, two countries known for their men’s tailoring, with Marks & Spencer on the left with England in grey and Dolce & Gabbana on the right with Italy in navy blue, LET THE MEN COMPETE! I will let you be the referee on who wins the best suit! Keep in mind, a suit for a woman is the equivalent to what lingerie is to a man!

Unlabel: Selling You Without Selling Out

A few months ago I received an email from a friend of mine telling me to read a book called “Unlabeled” by Marc Ecko. For who may not know him he is the head fashion designer of Ecko. You know that skating brand with the rhino? Well thats him! He started off with spray painting on t-shirts his own graffiti. With a $5,000 initial investment it turned into a billion dollar brand. In his book he wrote the obstacles he faced and the turbulences they went through. There are a few things that stuck with me that I definitely had to share with you.

  • Consciousness is underrated. Entrepreneurs can be so focused on the blinking lights of tomorrow land that they overlook the reality of today.

  • Sometimes I am doubtful and question myself as an artist, and say ‘at least I am an entrepreneur!’ Pssstt. ‘Entrepreneur’? Being an entrepreneur alone will not satisfy this mandate to create. The word sucks, like I joked earlier. I do really disdain the word. It has a passive, checking-of-the-boxes connotation, and it comes from the French word ‘entreprendre,’ which means to ‘undertake’.

  • What makes you a good artist is what will make you a good entrepreneur. If you’re authentic in the one, you’ll be authentic in the other.

  • Never feel bad about successfully selling your creations.

Never feel bad about creating art you can’t sell.

Just create.

  • Brands are not built upon finite numbers, but rather a curve composed of points along the axis of time and actions. The forces of life are always changing. But somehow we seek the validation that can only be found quantitatively in absolute numbers.
